Sample
A sample is a biological specimen
- Samples can be tested
- Samples are contained within Orders
- Samples are provided by patients
- Samples are created (collected) during a collection event
Sample Type
Defines what kind of biological specimen a sample is composed of

Sample ID
A unique value for a specific sample
Sample IDs:
- Used for sample tracking in the system
- Used to link the sample to the associated patient and test
- Can be derived from a sample’s scanned barcode value
- Can be entered/scanned manually or created automatically by the system
Sample IDs must be unique
All sample IDs must be unique or they will be rejected by the system. This prevents accidents where new samples/tests could interfere with existing samples/tests.
